Definition of microwaves. Application areas. The microwave spectrum. Household electronic components and their frequencies of operation. Electromagnetic spectrum.
Transmission Lines
Circuit representation of TL's, time domain TL equations, Lossless line, transmission lines with sinusoidal excitations, Finite transmission Lines. Impedance transtormations, some special transformations on a lossles TL, some special transformations on a lossy TL. Impedance matching. The Smith chart.
Waveguides
Definition of a Waveguide, classification of the modes of propagation, general solutions for TEM, TE and TM waves. Rectangular waveguides, TM modes, a separation of variables solution, propagation constant, cutoff frequency, the wave impedance, the guide wavelength, the phase velocity.
